Richard Roberts has a story to tell. A story is told about Sin and Death. On the Friday night after Jesus was crucified, Sin came running into the garden where the body of Jesus had been laid in the tomb. Sin cried out, “Death, do you really have Him?”
Death called back from within the tomb, “Yes, Sin, I really have Him. I’ve got my hand on Him. My shroud is around His body.” Sin left.
On Saturday night, Sin went back to the gar-den and called out to Death inside the tomb, “Do you still have Him? The word is out that He’s going to rise again after three days.” Death re-plied, “Go home. I’ve got it under control. My hands are on Him, and the stone’s in place. He’s not going anywhere!”
Sin left, but the next day he was back. He found the stone rolled away and Death sitting in the tomb, his head in his hands. “What hap-pened?” Sin asked. “Where is He?” Death said, “Something began to move around in that tomb. Suddenly that stone catapulted from the door, the angels of God filled the space, and Jesus shook me off and rose up out of that shroud, whole, well, and alive! He headed straight for His Fa-ther in heaven!”
“Did He say anything as He left?” Sin asked. “Just one thing,” Death answered. “He said, ‘Tell your good friend Sin that you’re both con-quered.’”
Richard Roberts continue. When this corruptible shall have put on in-corruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (I Corinthians 15:54-55).
Is this how you’d answer these questions: Are you pressured? Yes. Stressed? Very. Frus-trated? On a regular basis. You can take charge of negative situations that attack you by using the Word of God. Here are eight steps to help you break the grip of stress:
Make the first move. If you need a pair of shoes, how do you get them?
You make a move—you go to a shoe store. It’s the same when you’re under stress. You can do nothing, or you can say, “My God can help me. There’s nothing too hard for God!” (Jeremiah 32:27). This way you begin to take a step of faith to-ward your deliverance.
Turn your problems over to God. After taking that first step, enter into fellowship with God.
Instead of dwelling on the problem, dwell on the Problem Solver. God has the power to remove your stress, so take your heavy load and turn it over to Him as Psalm 55:22 NLT says: Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. That doesn’t mean that you turn your burden over to God and then take it right back. You turn it over to God. Trust His wisdom, and leave it with Him.
Plug into God’s power through prayer. Defeating stress requires more than wishful thinking. Your faith can’t be in a news report, or the stock market, or in a medical report; those are stress producers. Put your faith in God, who said, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6 NKJV). The Holy Spirit is always interceding on your behalf before the throne of God (Romans 8:26-27). You can join Him at any time by praying in the Spirit thru Richard Roberts. His power to overcome stress is yours for the asking!
I’m a detail person. I like to analyze things, get the facts and then pick them apart. I especially like to get into God’s Word, find a Scripture, and then pick apart every word in it. I found myself doing the same thing with the TV news reports following the attack of 9/11.
I tried to listen to every account of what was happening and process it. Without realizing it, I was spending hours trying to make sure I had all the up-to-date information. Then the Lord spoke to me, “Have you listened to Me as much as you’ve listened to the news reports on television today?” Well, that knocked me over. I thought about it, and my reply had to be, “No, Lord, the honest truth is that I haven’t.” God said, “Lindsay, for every word you hear from the world, you need to combat it with the Word of God, or you’ll never survive this.”
From then on, I processed every news report I heard on TV according to God’s Word. If I hadn’t, I would have been living in fear, worry, and torment. I explained to our daughters that no matter what we heard on television, we were to say, “But God said…” then finish with a truth from Scripture. That became our phrase, our battle cry, to fight off the barrage of frightening reports coming at us from every side.
Jesus did the same thing when satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Three times He said to satan, “It is written” (Matthew 4:1-11). No matter what fearful report the devil is bombarding you with, fight him with the big-gest weapon you have—God’s Word. Satan cannot compete with the Word.
